AFTER SCHOOL: Strike Day 2
Day two of our daily report on the San Francisco teachers' strike
Strikes are strange, often deceptive, events.
For one thing, there's no such thing as a legal or illegal strike — nor a popular or unpopular strike. There are only strikes that win, and there are strikes that lose.
This is hard for our dopamine-fried minds to understand. We're used to judging from a "social media" perspective. But likes and clicks won't secure the W. Something else is needed: workers' ability to inflict enough pain on management to make them cave. And from the look of strike day two — cave, they will!
DAY 2 STRIKE UPDATES ☻
- Scene Report: A huge pro-strike rally and march took place today, with hundreds of workers and hundreds more supporters. Rainy weather did not deter.
- Negotiation Status: The union secured the district's sanctuary status in negotiations, protecting students from possible ICE abductions. But workers are determined to get more.
- Picket Line Whispers: One worker heard that management has only recently reached out to healthcare provider HSS to discuss terms. In other words, the district did not take healthcare bargaining seriously until workers went on strike.
- The Lowdown: We debrief on negotiations thus far and what the teachers are fighting for.
- Wednesday Action: Striking workers call for Rally-Turned-Giant-Human-Banner-On-Beach Tomorrow (Wed, Feb 11), 12-1:30 p.m. — we're told to wear red.
LOSERS AND HATERS ☹
- Mayor 'Loaded' Lurie is empty-pocketed for SF public schools but pays for his kids to attend a private school with an eye-watering tuition of $47,775 per year! Of course, this doesn't include many other costs, like lunch (doubt those kids are eating microwaved frozen burritos!), nor after-school programs.
